Ten is too many

Josie and Meg almost share a birthday, along with everything else. For ten years they've each had big blowouts that involve movies, pooling and whatever, with a houseful of cousins and friends. It started back in 96 when they both had their first chocolate cake and their first bowls of icecream side by side. It was out on Gramma's huge front porch, the two of them were dressed in matching pink birthday dresses and they not only tucked into the ice cream together, they got simultaneous headaches. It was really funny watching the two of them: Tiny little bald headed girl stuffing their mouths with ice cream, bursting into tears, laying their foreheads on the table and this part they did in perfect unison; raising their heads from the table and demanding more ice cream. The last week of July was MegAndJosieBirthdayFestival Week. Last year they turned ten and Katie and I told them that was enough. They'd had more birthday parties than any kid can reasonably expect and we were done.
They were okay with that.
Because it turns out that they just meant it was okay if Katie and I stepped away from the proceedings. This year they planned it all themselves. We were pretty much informed weeks ago that on some day when everyone was available, they would appreciate a ride to the pool along with sundry cousins and mutual friends, then they'd like to have dinner (marinated chicken wings, yummmmm), cake (chocolate cherry, yummmmmm) at my house, then go have a sleep over at Katie's house.
I'm not really sure how we all got suckered into it but the party is today.
Actually I do know how they got us! They perfectly played to our weeknesses: I said "you'll sleep somewhere else? Okay." Katie said "I don't have to cook? Fine, then." William the Conqueror had nothin on these two.
We've just endured ten straight days of hot, sunny 90+ days topping out yesterday at 101. Today, the day of the big pool party blowout, it dawns dank, dark, sticky and wet.
Great.
But it seems that these little girls have a plan B. Josie was perusing the movie guide first thing this morning.
We'll see. Maybe it'll clear up before Zero hour, which isn't till this afternoon.
All I know is I gotta get ten pounds of chicken wings in the oven and a cake baked or a crowd of tweens will have my hide this evening.
