Blueberry Coffee Cake

We celebrated the last day of Summer vacation by having burgers on the grill and friends over. It wasn't a big party, just a casual sunday.
So we sat in the front with glasses of wine and watched the sunset and ate guacamole til the burgers were ready. Dinner was excellent. Corn on the cob and fresh tomatoes made it the perfect summer dinner.
When we were done, I had to make a blueberry coffee cake. I've been eating blueberry coffee cake on the first day of school for forty three years. That's when my oldest brother, Woody, started kindergarten. I've been baking it on the first day of school for twenty one. That's long it's been since Tyler started preschool.
I'm getting good at it.
This year I had to make three. One for Ty, when he left for Texas; one for Katie when she went to Tulane and now one for Zack and Josie, starting at their respective schools. I could've made a fourth, but I forgot to make one the day Jay started classed. Don't tell him.
So we all got up early and ate cake and got ready for school. Zack left here on his bike around 8:00. Josie doesn't need to be at school til later so we had some time before I took her.
Then my sister and I walked around the lake and talked about that ridiculous woman who wrote the book saying that raising kids was a waste of a woman's time.
I guess my time would've been better spent raising orchids or irish setters.
Although orchids are not much fun to hang around with, and irish setters are not good for watching movies with but I guess her kids don't like to hang out with her.
Katie's take was the best. She just waved at the lake and said "She's at work and we're here. Yeah, we're the stupid ones."
Today really was such a gorgeous, perfect summer day, the only thing that could've made it better would've been having the kids there too.
Oh well at least there's blueberry coffee cake ...
