We knew that today was going to be gorgeous so we had a plan.  Katie, Mom and I were going to the Arboretum and we were yanking the kids out of school to go with us.

It worked beautifully.  We all got up at the same time we always do, had our coffee, read the paper then hit the road.  We met at Mom's and off to the Arboretum we went.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, it's an enormous piece of land west of the twin cities that is simply a little bit of heaven on earth.  It's got formal gardens, lakes, ponds, woods, hills, glens, a bog and wild gardens hidden amisdst the rest that are a joy to find while walking through the woods.

The only thing more fun than wandering around in there on a glorious day in late September is wandering around it with a bunch of little kids who appreciate it, too.  As beautiful as it was today, with the trees just starting to turn, it's going to be even better in about two weeks when the trees are at their peak.  I've thought for years that Minnesota in October is the most beautiful place on earth.

So we all strolled through the gardens and the woods for a few hours then headed back to the main building for lunch.  We all grabbed what we wanted (Thanks Mom!) and then went outside to eat.  It was great.

Later on, back in town, Josie had a volleyball game at school at 5:00.  Her coach was very surprised to see her and told her sadly that the rule was that if you weren't in school on game day, you couldn't play.  Josie was very disappointed but we stayed and cheered on her team through two games.  She was feeling quite sorry for herself as she is just learning that sometimes you don't get to do everything you want to do.  At least not all on the same day.

Now it's raining out.  Again.

That's why we had to go to the Arboretum today, volleyball game or not.
