Just finished watching Thank You for Smoking.  This is my review:

HAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!  YES! YES!  AAHHAHAHAHAHAAA!

Definitely worth the rental.

I had to buy a new dvd player for the tv room today.  It's funny, we have this lovely room that we call the tv room and no one ever watches tv in there anymore.  The problem is that there isn't room for one of our hidef, widescreen tv's in that room, so the tv in there is the 32", old fashioned, square tv and Josie is the only one who watches in there.  It's really a great room, with a fireplace and the most comfy furniture in the house and we either have to get a hidef tv that's small enough for the space or remodel the room to make room for a larger tv.  It's crazy, I know.  On the other hand, we have a lot of dvd's of tv shows and they're all formatted for square tv, so it makes sense that we watch them in there.  So last night, Josie and I decide to watch the Mary Tyler Moore show, which Josie has never seen.

Is there anything more fun than introducing your kids to the classics?  I don't think so!

Anyway, since it's the least watched tv in the house it has the worst dvd player.

Last night the batteries in the remote control died.

So naturally I had to buy a new dvd player today.

We few, we lucky few; decadent, wasteful Americans!

It's not as crazy as it sounds.  First of all, I bought that player about three years ago when dvd players were shrinking in size and price.  It's one of the first models that was as small as a textbook and it cost all of $30.00.  It's some off brand but it worked just fine.  The problem with it was the remote control.  The thing was so small that you needed a magnifying glass to see which buttons were which and a stylus to press one.   To really make it suck, it only worked if you held it two inches in front of the machine.  It wasn't so much a "remote control" as it was just a "control".

So last night, Josie and I pop in the first disc of MTM and watch the pilot.  No remote,  we  just hit the "play" button.  This worked great until we tried to watch the second episode.  No page down button on the unit.  Can't make the machine do anything but the first option on each menu. So I open the remote to take out the batteries.  No normal batteries. No AAA. What I find is a weird little chip about the size of two stacked dimes.  I have no idea where to get a replacement for such a bit and God only knows what it would cost.  The last time I replaced the battery in my camera, it cost $15.00.  And I don't even like this player.

So I chucked it and bought a new one at Sam's club for $29.95.  With a decent remote that actually works from across the room.

Josie loved the show.  She immediately declared Ted Baxter her favorite and she couldn't get over how "cute" Mary's clothes were.

I've got three seasons of this to watch with her.  What a blast!

I haven't even shown her the Bob Newhart show yet!

Ted Baxter was the pinnacle of T.V. Everyhing before, built up to him, (Alan Brady),and everything since has been trying to catch up.
