Well it's that time of the year again!  That season of glittering goodwill and fun, fun, fun.

I'm talking basketball season, of course.  All this other nonsense is just a big fat, noisy distraction.

Josie has started practice.  After the first, she came out and declared her coach a goofus who didn't know anything.  This made me laugh on the inside, because I can't tell you how often I've heard my kids voice similar complaints.  I always tell them not to compare other coaches to their dad, to give their coaches respect and appreciate the guys who are willing to volunteer their time and efforts so that they can play. If it weren't for the generousity of these men and women, there wouldn't be any kid's athletics.  So show some respect!

After he second practice, she came out of the gym and said "My coach isn't a doofus, Mom.  It turns out I just suck at basketball."

I've seen her play. She doesn't suck.  She's not a gifted player or anything, but she's okay.

Zack's team is several games in.  He couldn't play in the first few due to an injury, but now he's getting a few minutes a game and when he's stronger it wouldn't be surprising if he starts.  His team is woefully short on talent and he can do a few things that may come in handy.  I love watching him play, I always have.

Tyler is now coaching down in Austin Texas.  His team, the St. Edward Hilltoppers, are doing well.  Ty is having a blast.  I miss watching him play.  When he was Josie's age, he was the best point guard in town.  He was the only kid who knew how to dribble, and he was averaging 22pts a game.  When he was Zack's age, he made All Conference in the City.  He went on to win two conference championships in college.  Ty's basketball career was a testament to determination over perception.

Katie is the black sheep in the family.  She hates basketball with every fiber of her 5'1" being.  Turns out when you eliminate this silly game from your life, you free up enough brain cells to become an award winning writer, you can graduate (In three and a half years) from a prestigious University, Magna cum Laude and you can score in the top .4% in the nation on the LSAT.  That's point 4%.  That means out of a thousand testers, only three scored higher than she did.  And she only studied for three months.

Still, she can't dribble worth a damn.

Jay's team is struggling this year.  They've only won half their games.  It's not a big deal, as it's still the preseason and the only thing that matters is the post season.  Conference play starts in a few weeks and they have time to work out the bugs.  Still, he's had guys who's entire careers with him didn't include as many losses as this team has given up this year.  It's weird going to the gym and not knowing if we were going to win.

This week, I saw both Zack's team and Jay's team play and I've got to say, I haven't seen this much ugly basketball in years.  On the other hand, watching Jay's point gaurd Xiro is worth the price of admission even when we lose.

Tyler's birthday was yesterday.  He's twenty four.
