Reality Check

MJ is ticked at me for ignoring her birthday on this page. It was actually about six weeks ago that my baby sister turned...
I can't type it.
MJ was born when I was a junior in high school. She came along eight years after my folk's last child. My dad wrote an article about her called "Bonus Baby", which ran in the February 1986 edition of the Reader's Digest.
And she's pissed that I didn't write about her here? What an ego!
The only time Dad wrote about me, he called me Dracula's other daughter. Here's what he wrote about Muzz;
...the only difficulty is ever getting enough of her. No one seems able to, for she sparkles and laughs all the time.
...she lights up the worlds of all who are near her...Mary Jeanne has been a dream, an authentic bonus baby, a joy I
would be overjoyed to repeat.
Of course he wrote all that years before her goth phase. I remember watching her slouch into the kitchen (sometime in the early nineties) with blue hair, white skin, black makeup and clothes and shrieking at Dad "Don't blame me if your car is broken! It was fine when I borrowed it!"
This sparkling dream of a child only graduated from high school because her teachers knew that if they failed her, she'd come back...
Naturally, she's the coolest one of us. She had to be, just to survive.
She got over her goth, convinced Mom and Dad that it wasn't the end of the world if one of their kids went to the Aveda Institute instead of college, is a phenomenally talented hair stylist who quit the profession when she realized that she hates the public as much as I do.
I waited 34 years for her to become funny and interesting but the wait has paid off in spades.
She was four when she danced at our wedding and sang "Tomorrow" on the staircase at the club.
Now she's 30 and will just have to forgive me if I can't quite wrap my brain around that fact.
