the Departed

Aside from basketball, I took a little time off from reading The World is Flat to watch The Departed this weekend.
I hadn't planned to, but my brother Andy is a member of the screen actor's guild and they sent him a dvd of it, which he kindly let me watch on Saturday.
Wow.
It's a shame that everyone in it isn't nominated for an Oscar. I've never considered myself a Leo fan but boy, did he bring it in this one. I know he's nominated for another role but I hope he wins just because he was so ridiculously good in The Departed.
As good as all the actors were, the most important part in the movie was the cell phone. There are other great actors who would've been just as good as this cast, but not only would the movie be different, the story couldn't even be told without cell phones. There were lots of guns and plenty of shootouts but the cell phone was definitely the most dangerous weapon in the movie. As Zack pointed out to me; every time a phone was opened or closed, it sounded like the sheathing and unsheathing of a sword. Just the sort of detail he would notice.
I'll buy it when it comes out. It's a movie I'll watch over and over just to savor the performances. It's the sort of movie that you'll see differently every time you watch it.
