Zack's team lost their last game of the season on Friday and Jay's team had to travel to the far northern end of the state to end their season with a loss in the region tournament, but Tyler has pulled through in the clutch to keep the family in the winner's circle this basketball season.
The St. Edwards University Hilltoppers won their conference championship last night by beating Incarnate Word 85-73 to take the Heartland NCAA Div II conference title!
Congratulations, Hilltoppers!
Since graduating from high school six years ago, Tyler's teams have done nothing but win, win, win.
It didn't hurt that he started his college career at MCTC, where winning is a way of life. Sure enough, as a freshman, his team won another conference championship. The next year they were Southern Division Champions. After two successful years with the Marauders, Ty moved on to the University of Wisconsin, where the Falcons hadn't won a conference title in generations. Call it luck if you want, but while Ty was there, they broke the streak and won their first conference Championship in 54 years.
When his playing days were over, Tyler came back to MCTC. In his two years on the coaching staff they won two more State titles. Then on to St. Edwards, and another championship season. That's a title a year, including five out of six conference championships.
As a college basketball player, Tyler's career record is 70-17.
As an assistant college basketball coach, his record is 75-13.
Not too shabby.
Now it's certainly true that others can take a lot of credit for these numbers. He played for some great coaches, with some great players and four of those six years he was at the feet of the master; his Dad. But the fact remains that this kid is familiar with winning.
As far back as grade school, his teams won championships. From the KCYO to AAU, he won conference titles and state titles. Even the one year he played high school football, his team won a State Championship.
Coincidence? Luck? Choosing good programs? All I know is that if you want to win a championship, it doesn't hurt to be standing next to Tyler Pivec.
