John Stossel wrote Give Me a Break back in '04 but I just got around to reading it.  He's living proof that one of the differences between liberals and conservatives is that when a conservative believes something and the facts prove him wrong, the conservative will change his mind, but when a liberal believes something and the facts prove her wrong, the liberal will suppress the facts.

Stossel began his career believing  that when there's a problem, it was the duty of government to do something about it.  The difference between Stossel and most folks is he continued to pay attention to how the government fixes actually worked and over the course of about thirty years came to the conclusion that government fixes invariably made conditions worse for everyone involved.  Stossel isn't a conservative; he's a libertarian.

He's also a gifted and entertaining writer who kept me fascinated all the way through what wound up a very quick read.  And he made me think about my own positions on a few issues, particularly our so called war on drugs.  I am very adamantly anti-drug use.  I've never heard a persuasive argument for the legalization of drugs.  All I've ever heard is retarded rhetoric from burnt out brains, from folks who's existance pretty much belies their argument that drug use is a victimless crime.

But the last few chapters of Mr. Stossel's book laid out a pro-legalization point of view based on econimcs and human nature that I found compelling.

I really think that every ninth grade civics course in the country should make this book required reading.
