Pride and Prejudice the Lesser

I just finished watching Keira Knightly's version of Pride and Prejudice.  I had heard it was pretty good, and it was okay.  Parts of it were quite good, but over all I don't think it held a candle to the BBC mini series.  In a two hour version, it's pretty hard to pull off the long, slow agony of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.  You can't really appreciate the horror of Lydia and Wickham in this one; Wickham's only in two scenes.

My biggest beef with this one is Mr. Darcy.  Okay, he's no Colin Firth, I was prepared for that but COME ON.

This guy, Matthew MacFadyen.  What the Hell??  He's not attractive at all, he has a forehead as big as Montana, the personality of a turnip and as much charisma as a cold bowl of oatmeal.

No Colin Firth?  HE COULDN'T TIE COLIN FIRTH'S NECK CLOTH.

Seriously, by the end I was wondering "didn't anyone audition for this part at all??"  I can't for the life of me figure out why they'd cast this guy.

The BBC version is two and a half times as long, but it's four times better.

You are entitled to your opinion, of course, but I thought that Matthew MacFadyen's performance was subtle and nuanced and quite wonderful. Just becasue he wasn't obvious doesn't mean he was dull. It just makes his performance one that you have to really pay attention to. I think it's great how I didn't find him attractive at all at the start of the film, but had a serious crush at the end, mirroring Lizzie's progression of feeling.
