I spent yesterday afternoon, a gorgeous day by any standards, up in my office working. Katie called at about six to say she had fed the kids and they were walking down to get ice cream at the lake, so I biked over there and we walked around the lake while the kids ate ice cream and biked.
I got home to an empty house which left me totally pumped because I hoped it meant I wouldn't have to join Jay at a dinner party, but when I called his cell he said that Yes, I was expected so get over there. So I showered up and headed out. Of course I had fun, I knew I would. It's just that I would have been perfectly happy putting on my jammies and watching the Olympics with Josie instead.
The dinner party was our usual crowd plus two other couples that I'd never met and they were all very nice and funny and I wasn't the only, or even the first one, to run in the house yelling "Michael Phelps is going to be swimming soon!" So we all watched the relay and cheered and then a bunch of us stuck around to watch the men's 100 final.
How insane was that? The Jamaican, Bolt, won by two or three strides! That just does not happen in the 100. Not once you're out of grade school races, anyway. I've never seen anything like it. I still can't believe it and I watched it live. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they drug test him and discover that he's a super hero.
I stayed up too late. Again. Which wouldn't be such a big deal but this morning after church I had to take Josie to camp. We piled all her stuff and all Katie's kids stuff in the car and Kate and I hauled them up to the FUNNEST WEEK OF THE SUMMER!
Is there anything more fun than several hours in the car with the kids? I swear we weren't out of the metro before the whining started.
"I'm hungry."
"I need to pee."
"I'm sticky."
"I'm poopy."
Of course, that last one was me.
Katie solved the whining problem with a big bag of peanut m&m's. Laced with benedryl.
God bless Big Pharmaceutical!
Actually, the m&m's were for me. With that feedbag strapped on, the whining coming from the kids didn't bother me at all.
Now the kids are all set at camp, their beds made and their places all staked out. I dropped Katie at home and Jay is out front drinking a mimosa and watching the sun set over the park. We're marinating some chicken to toss on the grill and I've got my hot and spicy V8 in hand.
Time to go.
