Yesterday, Katie got the keys to her new apartment.

I got up early and went for a run.  I'm trying to get back into some kind of groove that's good for me.  I've spent the better part of the summer eating everything in sight, drinking way too much, staying up way too late every night and taking any excuse possible not to work out.  This cannot stand.

I meant I cannot stand.  I'm fat, tired and hung over.

Man, it's been a great summer!!

So I've run, biked or walked every day this week.  If I don't run when the weather is nice, how am I going to stand it when winter comes?  This has been a hot week, but I've been running in the morning when it's not too bad.  I almost took yesterday morning off because I had promised to help Katie move and I knew that would be a lot of work but I was good and I ran.

I was really regretting that decision midway through the afternoon. I had forgotten how much I hate moving.  It wasn't even that bad.  Katie and her new roomie, Caylie, had enlisted the help of Zack and another guy who works with them, so we had two strong men to carry all the big stuff.  As a middle aged mom, I was only expected to carry small things and drive one of the vans.  Getting old rocks! Still, it was hot and there were a lot of stairs.  We got most of their stuff moved into the new place in just about two hours.

The apartment is very nice.  It's in an old building near one of the lakes and within easy walking distance of Caylie's work and right off the bus line if Katie doesn't want to drive to school.  The place has high ceilings, lots of woodwork and built in cupboards and brand new insulated windows.  There are three chandeliers and a dozen antique wall sconces.  Once they get it straightened out and decorated it will be really nice.

Zack kept looking in cupboards and closets, trying to find a place to call his room.  He really wants to move out.

Jay has already had to get back to work at school so last week he picked up Zack's text books.  There are four of them and they're all paperback.  With lots of pictures.  Katie looked at them and said "these aren't text books, they're comic books."

"I love college already." Zack replied.

He told us later that he'd begun reading through the texts and he was really excited.  He can't believe he's looking forward to school.  In fourteen years, that's never happened.  I think he will do brilliantly.  First, he's a brilliant kid and second, he finally gets to do what he's interested in.

I miss Tyler.
