Good News!

Experts announced yesterday that the US is indeed in a recession and the good news is that we've actually been in it for a year now!
Isn't that great? I mean, really; if you can be in a recession and not even know it, then how bad can it be? For me, the orders haven't slowed down at all, so this new down turn seems to be proving that the needlepoint bidness is as recession proof now as it was back in the early nineties and early eighties. Hmmm...is "recession" merely a cyclical thing that comes around every so often, and even thought it sucks, you bear it and gut it out, like February? If so, GWB's economy managed to make this one about six years late. That's not necessarily a good thing. Believe me, as a woman I know that cyclical things that show up late are usually more painful than they would've been on time. I suppose what makes this recession more painful for some folks is that they were stupid enough to believe the ridiculous stories in the media throughout the nineties that claimed the business cycle was over and that it was nothin' but blue skies from now on. When you really believed it would never rain again, a few drops can seem like a deluge.
The better news is that the same experts who claim this recession began a year ago, say they expect it to end sometime next summer. Just in time for Team Obama to take the credit.
Well, I hope they're right and the economy is back on the upswing next year. I hope this isn't just the deep breath before the plunge.
A friend of mine spent Thanksgiving with an idiot who insisted that today's economy was every bit as bad as that of the Great Depression. May that ignoramus be able to hold onto that opinion for the rest of her days!
I got the call from my Christmas card calligraphy client this morning. I've been addressing this company's cards for a few years now. I wasn't really expecting them to call this year; they're a financial management company and their card list is mostly banks and such. I wasn't sure they'd want to plunk down the cash for an unnecessary expense like me this year. (When times are tough, calligraphy is hardly considered an essential service. Never forget that it's rich folks who are the true patrons of the arts.) Sure enough, the card list is shorter this year; half their former clients no longer exist, but they still want to be classy with their remaining business buddies. Yay!
I love capitalism!!
A good friend of mine, who happens to be insane, told me he thought capitalism was evil. I was drunk at the time but I'm pretty sure that's what he said. He followed that statement up with an explanation of how evil corporations are. I don't think "corporations" means what he thinks it means. Sometime, when I haven't downed a bottle of wine, I will ask him to clarify his position on this matter.
