At the moment, Al Franken has declared himself our new senator.  Isn't that great? He's good enough, he's smart enough and gosh darn it, people like him.

Except we really don't.

I've been ignoring the news for the last month.  It's been the Holidays, I've been busy and all the news is crazy.  Soon I'll have to get my head back into it and readjust for the brave new world.  I'm looking forward to it.

We had ice dams on our dining room and tv room roofs.  We're usually pretty good about shoveling all the snow off of the roof there, but Zack didn't seem to understand his orders.  He did the job, but probably not as thoroughly as I used to do it, although I would occasionally get dams, too.  The other day, it was kind of warm out, so I hauled out the ladder and my hammer and went to work.  Some of the ice came off really easily.  Some of it didn't.  I didn't mind.  It wasn't cold, the sunset was gorgeous, there were folks skating on the rink across the street...it was really nice.  In fact, I was having a blast.  There's something therapeutic about whacking away at big old ice chunks stuck to your roof.  A gals gotta work off her aggression somewhere, right?  Better I attack the roof with a hammer than  the mailman, I always say.  Really.  I say that at least twice a week.  Once I actually said it to the mailman.  He never came back.

Anyway, I bruised my palms from all the banging, so I took a day off from work and spent the time taking down Christmas decorations.  Josie helped and we managed to get the tree and the mantle dismantled.  I only destroyed two strings of lights ripping them off the tree.  Now the carcass of the tree will probably lay in my living room for a week before I find the time to wrap it up and haul it back to the basement, where it lives through the nice months of the year, like a vampire, hiding from daylight.

Jay has been sick since New Year's eve.  He's coming out of it, which is good.  He has a terrible, chest deep cough which is one of those awful rumbly things that makes you clear your own throat when you hear him.  But about six weeks ago, my Dad emailed me a 'new wives tale' about putting mentholatum or vaporub all over the bottom of your feet to help you sleep at night.  I did it in early December when I had a cold and it worked.  I slept well, but I didn't have a cough.  Well, Jay started doing it about three nights ago and he hasn't coughed at night since he started!  So, next time you have a cough, remember the mentholatum: rub a thick layer on the soles of your feet, wear socks to bed and sleep like a baby.

The crock pot has been a smash hit.  At first Jay was afraid it wouldn't be big enough but we've had several dinners out of it now and they've all been delicious.

So, next to the crocs Katie gave him three years ago, it's the second present any of us have given him that he likes!
