This morning, Josie just happened to mention the book her class is reading.

I was actually in another room at the time and wasn't sure I heard her correctly.  "What book did you say?"  I yelled.

"The Killer Angels."  she repeated.

"The Killer Angels is on of my favorite books of all time!" I yelled.  "I'll read it too, and we can talk about it!"

I ran out into the kitchen and sure enough she was looking through a copy of Michael Shaara's fabulous book about the battle of Gettysburg.

"That is a GREAT book." I said.

"You're talking it up pretty high, Mom."  Josie warned.  "It may not live up to it!"

"That's the only book I've ever read that was so exciting I had to get up and pace this kitchen as I read it!"

I'm so excited!  If this book doesn't get more kids reading, nothing will.  Not only is it a nail-biting good read, it's about as important a moment in American history as there is.  The kids will learn something very important about their American heritage that not enough of our younger generations know.  The best part is that it features real people, who lived, died, suffered, sacrificed and performed heroics in service to a cause much greater than themselves.

I will have to tell her teacher how glad I am that this book was chosen for the kids to read.
