It's all good. The team jumped out to an early lead in Saturday's region championship game and never looked back. We beat the team from Wisconsin and made it look easy. Our men will be leaving for the national tourney on Tuesday.
The stands on Saturday were packed with Pivecs. Pickled Pivecs packing peppers. Some of them might have only been there to see the very lovely and talented Phanie Pivec sing the national anthem and she did such a good job that it was worth the drive downtown, not to mention sitting through a basketball game afterward.
I sat with my parents. My Dad has loved the game for a million years and I think it had to bother him at least a little that none of his own sons played. Sure, Joe played in high school but only because his hockey career had been killed in a car accident. Basketball was Joe's consolation prize. Dad's consolation prize finally showed up when Tyler hit the scene. Anyway, Dad loves the game and always enjoys watching Jay's teams. I had told my Mom a few games back that she was NOT allowed to mock the opposing team's players or coaches but that the refs are fair game. She was on them from tip off to final buzzer. You'd have thought those were her sons all over the floor the way she was yelling. I don't know if she knows a foul from a flyover but she seemed absolutely sure that the refs were letting those lousy Wisconsin kids beat up on her boys and SHE WASN'T HAVING IT.
"I think we're gonna have to make her sit on the other side of the gym from now on." my Dad said to me in the middle of the second half.
"No way." I said. "We're the only ones who can keep her from charging the floor."
We had the lead the entire game but I was still relieved when there was only two minutes left and we had a 19 point lead. As Zack put it later, this team just knows how to slowly take the opposition apart.
So that was a huge relief.
After the game I joined MJ, Fran and Katie and we went to Keegan's for a blogger party. It's always fun to see the cyber crowd. Jay and Mike M. had gone to another game after ours and then they joined us at Keegan's after.
In typical Jay fashion, the next thing I know we're practically having dinner with a very nice couple we've never seen before. The tables all had little signs on them saying "reserved for parties of four" and this couple wanted to sit so Jay told the waitress we were with them. They ate dinner, we had a drink and we talked books, movies, business and family. It was a blast. The fellow was from New Zealand originally. Now he works for Supervalue, specializing, he said in "Bullshit and propaganda." We got to talking about the economy and he said he just finished a really good book by George Friedman and I was able to yell "The Next 100 Years! I want to read that!" I had just happened to catch the author on Dennis Prager's show last week and it really does sound like a good book.
We didn't stay at the party too late. We were fairly exhausted from the nerves, excitement and relief of the tourney.
Then, today there was another Bad Catholic Mothers party.
It's been a heck of a weekend.
