I talked to Tyler this morning. He's in New York with the team, he flew up from Austin on Thursday. He's never seen this team play but he talks to his dad every day and he knows all about it. He's been saying since the middle of January that if they made it to New York, he'd fly up to see them.
Yesterday's game was the first time he'd gotten to see what all the hoopla is about.
He was impressed.
The last time the Mavericks went to the national tournament was four years ago. Ty went with that team as a member of the coaching staff. He said this team would eat the lunch of the '05 team.
At halftime yesterday he went to the locker room to tell his dad what a great job they were doing and was surprised to find Jay not very pleased with their first half performance. Ty told me that he talked with several others at the tourney who had seen us play during the season and they agreed with Jay that the men weren't playing as well as they could.
Ty told me that if this was how they looked on an off night he couldn't wait to see them at their best.
He then told me that he watched all the other teams and that there was no question in his mind that ours is the best team. Not that that means anything. It's March and anything can happen.
But oh, if we play well....
The game was closer than usual, but we won the semi final round by 11.
The MCTC Mavericks play for the national title tomorrow night at 8.
33-1.
