Happy Easter!
We began our Easter celebration last night, at the Easter Vigil at the Basilica. It was a lovely, warm evening and the service started on the steps of the church, with a bonfire. We all proceeded into the church holding our little vigil candles, gently glowing in the cavernous darkness of the very large church. It was cool.
It got slightly hotter when my candle burned low.
"Mom," Josie whispered to me "You're on fire."
My candle had gotten so short that it lit up the paper bobeche. I blew it all out and went back to staring at all the folks marching up the aisle holding gold banner aloft.
"Nope," Josie whispered. "Still burning."
I looked down. The bobeche had rekindled. I blew on it again and this time it stayed out.
The service began at 7 and went on til after 10. Now, I know the Easter Vigil is a long service and we were prepared for that, but three hours plus is excessive. I was never bored; there was too much going on. Singing, music, choirs, readings, people in white robes carrying chrystal pitchers full of water over their heads up and down the ailes, baptisms, confirmations, first communions...this service had it all in spades. The only things that weren't covered were matrimony and ordination. I guess they felt they had to hold something back for Sunday morning. It was fascinating. Next year I'm going to Annunciation.
We had eaten before mass but it lasted so long that we had to order pizza on the way home.
Then I watched Zac Efron host SNL while I made baskets and hid eggs.
