According to the White House, the DOD had to ask twice to get permission from the president to take out the Somali pirates holding Captain Richard Phillips hostage.

What?

A.) they had to ask?
B.) they had to ask twice??

"Hey, Mom, the burner is on fire.  Should I put it out?"
"No.  I need the baking soda for later."
"But the fire is  scorching the ceiling.  Can I put it out NOW?"
"Oh, okay."

In addition to having to ask twice, the White House told the navy they could only use deadly force if absolutely necessary.

A century ago, when an American  was taken hostage far from home, our then president gave a very different answer.

"Pedacaris alive or Raisuli dead." was all Teddy Roosevelt had to say on the matter.

How far we've come...down the wrong road.

If a movie is ever made about this incident, they'll have to call it "The Windy and the Lyin'."
