My Birthday

My birthday was Saturday.  I am now 49 years old, which is weird because I'm so young.

We don't really make a big deal of birthdays around here, by which I really mean "I don't make a big deal about birthdays."  My husband and my kids really do make a big deal.  I just never remember.  It all comes from growing up in a house so packed with people that birthdays were as frequent as Wednesdays.  You don't celebrate Wednesdays, do you?  You do?  Well, good for you.

Jay can't remember birthdays, anniversaries or any other date. My favorite birthday was the time we were getting into bed and I said "Today was my birthday."  He never remembers his own birthday either.  Especially his 50th. All he can remember of that one is that he vowed to never drink tequila again.   He can remember every golf shot he's ever hit and every play by every player on every team he's ever coached but he has no idea when our anniversary is.  Well, okay he has an idea.  Sometime in the summer, right?

He actually called me from his office last year to ask how long we'd been married.

"I don't know...a million years?" was my answer.  Seriously, I still think it's 1987 so how in the world am I supposed to remember how long we've been married?  Turns out he had me on speaker phone because some buddy at school didn't believe him when he said neither of us knew.

So I turned 49.  How is that even possible?

And who are these adults who keep calling me "Mom"?

Josie and Jay gave me a new digital camera.  I had been complaining that our antique (six years old) digital was too big, too slow and ate batteries like they were m&ms.  So they gave me a new, tiny quick and sweet one.  Yay!  I hope Jay kept the reciept because I can write off a camera.

In the evening we had two separate parties to go to.  One was a birthday party for a good friend.  We went early and had drinks and appetizers and some good laughs but we couldn't stay for dinner; we were expected at another birthday party out west.  All the Pivec adults were having dinner at Steve and Pam's.  Steve and I share a birthday and have been celebrating together for the last million or so years.

All in all it was a terrific day and I had a really good time.  I didn't bake a cake because the house is still full of Easter candy.  Zack told me I could finish off his chocolate bunny.  It was the least he could do since he didn't chip in on the camera.
