First Round, Hubbell Open 2009

The opening round of the fourteenth annual family golf tournament known as the Hubbell Open was played yesterday. The weather was a major obstacle. It was never belligerent enough to stop play, merely capricious enough to confuse and confound players who expected the next hole to be played under the same lovely, mid summer conditions as the last, only to find wind, raindrops and temperature swings lurking in the rough. It was like dating a supermodel with PMS.
The field was large, which is odd, considering how many regulars couldn't make it. Tyler, JP and Jeff are all out of state, satisfying business obligations. They decided employment was more important than family honor. I know; what the hell?
Last year's champion was likewise occupied, leaving the field wide open. This was taken advantage of by Walks, who won the first round by a mere two strokes.
The bulk of scores at the end of play were grouped in the mid 80s, with Big John G only two strokes off the lead.
Inspired, perhaps by Tom Watson's near miracle of a week ago in the Open, Big Daddy Hubbs may have decided that this year, he wants the Gross, net
and senior titles.
The lovely Mr. Curry tried valiantly to blind his opponents by wearing an ensemble known as
"A Tisket, a Tasket" but shot a disappointing 88.
Tee off is in an hour.
It's any body's tournament.
