Birds of Prey Know They're Cool

The other day we enjoyed watching a hawk devour a wren in the back yard.
I would've expected that to be the coolest bird I watched this week but I'd have been wrong.
MJ and I were walking around the lake when we noticed, high up in a newly bare tree, an eagle.
A bald eagle, it's white head gleaming in the afternoon sunshine, perched thirty feet up, looking around like
King Moonracer on the Island of Misfit toys.
At first I wrote "King Hellraiser" and then I thought "wait. that can't be right."
This big ass bald eagle was huuuuge. Even from that distance we could see that it was at least three feet from head to toe. Then, as we stood right under the tree, staring up at it, it spread it's wings and took off over the lake. It was fishing. After swooping low on the water, it spent the next ten minutes or so soaring around the band stand and over the bird sanctuary. It was so dang big we could see it easily even from where we were, near the tennis courts.
Unless I see a
Roc later this weekend, that's the coolest bird I'll be seeing in quite a while.
