Mr. and Mrs. Serenity Smith

Jay has been in the mood for movies lately. this is unusual for him; he doesn't really like movies. What he likes is sitting in the dark eating popcorn. The movies he's actually enjoyed can be counted on one hand and three of them are "Stripes".
We were home alone on Saturday, both kids having gone off to help Kent at Duck Duck Days. No, you won't get an explanation as to what that is. When we were done doing what we always do when there aren't any kids around...what? We made dinner. get your mind out of the gutter.
After ...dinner, Jay asked me what movies we had in the house. We had no new netflix; he wouldn't have watched A Bug's Life or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, anyway. We do own about three hundred movies, so I started asking him what he was in the mood for.
I know we have several extremely funny comedies he hasn't seen but he claims to have seen them and not liked them.
The 40 year old Virgin? "Seen parts of it. Didn't make me laugh."
Wedding Crashers? "Seen some. Not thrilled."
Stranger than Fiction? "Will Ferrel? Nah."
Clearly he wasn't in the mood for a comedy. He's never seen options 1 or 2; he may have seen a moment or two. That's all the excuse he needs to pretend he's seen it and didn't like it. He'd catch the scene from the Hangover where the guys are approaching the car in the impound lot and turn the channel before the naked guy leaps out of the trunk and then claim the movie didn't make him laugh.
More questions made me decide he was in the mood for action/adventure. He really does like those.
Star Trek? "Loved it. Once was enough." blasphemy!! a dozen times isn't enough!
More questions and we narrowed the choice down to Mr. and Mrs. Smith or Serenity. I liked both movies a lot but pushed for Serenity. Naturally, he chose Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
He didn't like it. Said it never took off. I pointed out that they trashed their own house and a Home Depot and the body count was in the double digits. He nodded but wasn't' thrilled. Perhaps he was expected Angie's boobs, but he's not really into nudity on screen.
We rented an adult film once, many many years ago and it only made us scream with laughter. I keep hearing that there's no such thing as a guy who doesn't like poorn but he doesn't seem to. He won't even watch Sex and the City with me because the one scene he saw involved some naked hilarity. (It was the episode where Samantha dons a wig and spies on Richard, catching him having lunch with another woman. Yeah, you know the one I mean.)
So last night, Josie and I decided to watch Serenity because we watch it two or three times a year because it's AWESOME.
She invited her Dad to join us and he did.
I could tell he liked it better than Mr. and Mrs. Smith because he didn't keep getting up and leaving the room. He also laughed at some of the funny lines. He predicted the death of the bureaucrat at the beginning and not being blind or stupid, realized immediately that Mal is in love with Inarra but didn't see much else coming. When it was over, he said "Well that was a lot better than last night."
Well, yeah. I reminded him that I had wanted to watch Serenity to begin with.
It won't matter; next time he'll still ignore my first pick for movies.
This is part of the secret to our long and happy marriage; separate tv sets.
