the End of Summer

This is the earliest end of summer vacation ever. I hate it. I always hate it when summer vacation ends even though I haven't had to go back to school in twenty eight years.
It's a cliche that moms dance for joy when the kids go back to school but I never have. I like the long, lazy days of summer and I like having my kids around. Maybe it's just that my kids are really cool...
Of course, three of them are adults now and the start of school has no affect on their lives. Zack decided to go back to college this semester, although in the spring he had declared himself done. If the economy were better and he had a full time job, that would have made a difference. As it is, he may as well stay in school. I hope he likes it.
Ty's been done for years and is fortunate enough to have landed a job in the so-far recession proof world of golf supplies. He's applied for another position within his company; it would get him out of the office and on the road. He would be a spectacular salesman face to face; he's a Pivec.
Katie is finally done with school, having been pulling in straight As for 22 years. She took the bar exam in late July and will know in October whether or not she can practice law in the great state of Minnesota. Except, of course for the small problem of there being no jobs. She may never practice law. She may go back to school, who knows?
But Josie is still in school and it's Josie for whom I baked a blueberry coffee cake this morning.
Jay and Zack actually started last week and I missed it. I've never missed a first day of school; it just came up so suddenly!
Part of the problem is that this summer (and spring) were so jam-packed with events. I haven't had my fill of long laziness, not even close! My calendar has been filled with notes since April and I HATE it when my calendar is full of stuff. I like to play every day by ear. Now, I'm bound by school and volleyball and whatever...
On the other hand, it will be September soon and the next two months are always the best, weather wise, around here.
Maybe I'll finally get those running shoes I've been trying to save up for since March.
Maybe not.
