Casual Sundays with Mr Curry

A Disappointing September

The weather this September has been disappointing.  After a spectacular summer, which was hot and sunny day after day with several thunderstorms thrown in at night to keep things green and interesting, it's like September rolled in and someone flipped a switch.

We went from 90 degrees to 50 degrees over night and it hasn't come back.  Not only that, it's been windy and wet a majority of the time.  I don't mind windy and hot; it keeps things cool but windy and wet is annoying.

I feel particularly gypped because September is usually the start of the two best months of the year, weather wise.  September is when the heat and humidity of August is supposed to give way to moderate, sparkling blue days.  Shorts, t-shirts and flip flops are supposed to replace swim suits.  We're not supposed to have to get out the parkas.

There have been a handful of gorgeous days.  Yesterday was one of them; it was a perfect September day; 70 degrees, blue skies and both the Twins and the Vikings played.

They both lost but that's neither here nor there.

I did not get a chance to walk around the lake or even stick my head outside.  I'm trying to grind out as many orders as I can while I've got them.  Soon, customers will begin to head south for the winter and that's when the orders dry up.  Last winter was awful and I see no reason why this winter will be any better.

I hope I'm wrong, of course.

Saturday evening we had a great time at the lovely Mr. Curry's house.  He had some friends in from out of town so after the game (Twins lost, I think) they all headed to his homestead.  I hadn't seen his kitchen since he put in the finishing touches.  It's gorgeous.  Absolutely gorgeous.  It's completely fitting in his big, beautiful Victorian era house.  He had to do a bit of tweaking of the dining room as well, having blown out most of one wall and the two rooms seem twice as big as the spaces had before and they're...

Well, I'd be more than happy to come over and bake cookies in that kitchen, any time!

The folks we met were from Atlanta and absolutely delightful.  It wasn't a warm night but it was dry and starry so we all sat out back by the fire and ate our dinner (from Primo; yum!) and drank our wine outside.  It was great.

Josie has started her Confirmation classes.  Last night was a mandatory meeting for the parents as well, so Jay came to church from the Twins game and we met him there at the end of Mass and we all went into the school together.  We sat with a couple who used to belong to OLG but fell in love with the Basilica about five years ago.  Their son is in Josie's class.

Each of the kids (6th grade through 10th), had to get up and introduce themselves, say what school they attended and what their favorite thing to do was.

Most of them said a sport or musical instrument but three of them said their favorite thing to do was sleep.  Josie took the easy route and said her favorite thing to do is play volleyball.

It's not.

It's second.

Her favorite thing to do is play smear with her grandparents but she didn't feel like giving that bit of info to total strangers.

One of the things addressed to the parents was whether or not there would be a place for them to hang out during the Sunday night classes.  A lot of them are coming from pretty far away; Lakeville, Rogers, Wayzata.  Too far to drop the kids at 5:30 and be back by 7.

Jay and I just looked at each other and said "Joe's!"

Joe's Garage is right down the block. It's a great fun bar and restaurant.  There's also cafe Lurcat, right next door.  Parents can easily go to 4:30 Mass, drop the kids at class and have a lovely dinner or  few drinks within walking distance.  These are all adults, they know how much they can imbibe before heading back to the distant suburbs.

After the class/meeting, we headed out to my folks house where Mom had cooked several racks of baby back ribs and invited everyone out.  My brother Joe is back from the Ghan (that's what he calls it.) and it's always great to see him.  His boys are all playing football and Martha is burning up her school's Varsity cross country team, which is awesome because the only girls who can beat her are two feet taller than she is.  She's a tiny little button of a speed demon.

It was a school night so the party didn't last too long but I'm glad we got to see everyone.

This morning is bleak, dark and wet.

Oh well.
