A Mom Moment

Jay and I slept in this beautiful Saturday morning. We didn't get up till 9:30 and were both delighted to find the sun out for only the fifth time this entire month.
I was pouring Jay some coffee and I thought "This is great! We are so ready to be empty nesters!"
Josie had slept over at a friend's house so things were very peaceful.
"Wow," I thought. "With the three older ones all adults now, and moved out we only have two more years until she's finished with high school. After that, who knows? Most likely she'll be planning on moving out and probably going away to college. We won't have to get up every morning to haul her to school.
We're so ready for this!
Since Jay and I both set our own schedules, there's no reason why every morning can't be like this; lazy and peaceful. We can sip our coffee at our leisure...enjoying the morning sunshine. I can't wait."
Standing at the coffee machine, I could see right out the back door to the sunny deck. Right there is where I took a picture of the kids every year on the first day of school. As I looked, I could actually see Tyler and Zack in their red polo shirts and blue pants, Katie and Josie in the red and black jumpers of Risen Christ school.
Tyler had always been little and wiry and buzzing with energy while his younger brother was a big, happy chunk of indolence.
Katie had been a miniature porcelain doll of a girl, a tiny Elizabeth Taylor with her dark blue eyes and almost black hair and Josie was the prototype of a Minnesota girl next door; all arms and legs and smile.
WHERE DID MY BABIES GO????
Suddenly, my ready-for-empty-nesterdom had been completely swamped by weepy nostalgia for my toddlers.
It had taken all of three seconds.
