A Star is Born

I've got all three versions of A Star is Born on my netflix queue.  I've already watched the first two; the original starring Fredric March and Janet Gaynor and the first remake starring James Mason and Judy Garland.

I found the first one charming, romantic and sad.  I had very high hopes for the second because it has Judy Garland, one of the most talented people Hollywood ever killed.

I was sadly disappointed.  James Mason was grand and Judy Garland threw her heart into it but the movie was doomed by dull songs that lasted forever and tedious dance numbers.  It was like watching the Broadway Melody part of Singing in the Rain eight or nine times in one movie but at least Broadway Melody (except for the ballet with Cyd Charisse) is a good, fun, colorful number.

I actually fast forwarded through the numbers in the second half of the movie, having been thoroughly bored by every single song in the first half.  And I love musicals! Even without the musical bits, the movie was way too long.

I've got the Barbara Streisand/Kris Kristofferson version coming soon.  I hope it's better than Judy/James.

It kinda has to be.
